California State Meet @ Woodward Park in Fresno, CA Race time was 10:40am, the weather was clear and a crisp 62 degrees. Perfect running weather. The gun went up and off they ran in the biggest race of the year. This gruelling 5k course, while looking flat & easy on paper, is in fact a tough course that decides California State Champions every year. Instead of boring you with all the details, we'll just recap the UHS highlights. The first Upland finisher was Ryan Gamboa(12), placing 8th with a time of 15:23. Ryan's time was 20 seconds faster than last year and 42 seconds faster than his freshman year. The second Upland runner was Albert Davila(12), who crossed the finish with a time of 15:55. Albert's time was 8 seconds faster than his State Meet time last year. Next came Nick Johnson(10) at 16:05. That's a very impressive time for a sophomore. Rounding out the five scoring runners, Upland had John Guzman(10), at 16:13 and Travis Fernandes(12), at 16:14. Travis' time was an improvement of 13 seconds from his 2005 State Meet time. The combined time of the five scoring runners was 1:19:50. Thats an improvement of 1 minute & 55 seconds from the team time in 2005. Wow! what a huge improvement. Robert Martines(11), was Upland's sixth runner with a 16:37. Thats an improvement of 27 seconds over last year. Running the 3.2 mike course in 16:38 was Andrew Quezada(10). Thanks to dedication and hard work the boys finished the race with a memorable 5th place and a new UHS team record for the Woodward course. |

| NIKE TEAM NATIONALS Dec. 2, 2006 the Upland boys varsity team raced on a soggy 5,000-meter course. Unlike any other course they've run on before this one had obstacles like woopty do's and hay bails, not to mention the large sections of mud resembling a pig's trough, firm spots were very few and far between. Finishing the race with a fourth place trophy is surely something to be proud. Ryan Gamboa finished 6th(16:44.4) behind the Kenyan team becoming the first American to cross the finish line. Next after a slip in the mud came Albert Davila finishing 22nd(17:18.0). Third for Upland was Nick Johnson who braved the loopity loops with no miss haps finishing with a time of 17:23.0. Robert Martinez finished 4th for Upland with a time of 17:51.1. Then the determined John Guzman(17:56.7) came across the finish with one shoe, leaving his other shoe to be claimed by the thirsty muck. A disappointed Travis Frenandes crossed the finish line at 18:02.8 followed by Andrew Quezada(18:30.5). After the race the Upland boys exchanged uniforms with the Kenyan team. Race Video & Interview To every ones surprise an eighth man race was put together by the California teams after the sweeps were over. So not even Kyle Goodman was left clean and warm. After hot showers and multiple loads of laundry the boys from Arcadia came over for pizza and hot wings. Once every ones stomach was full we packed up and headed for the Ice Rink. Inside the Lloyd Center Mall we met up with the Madera boys. The three California teams had a great time, some learning to skate and others showing off their skating skills. A good time was had by all on the ice. |

| The 2006 Banquet was similar to all the Mike Wilson era banquets that preceded it with one big exception, for the first time ever, the banquet was held in the newly remodeled library. As we have grown accustom to, 7 year Head Coach Mike Wilson had plenty of great things to say about his undefeated Baseline League Champion teams. He thanked his 1st year Assistant Coach Amechi Nwaohia for the tremendous job he did with the boys and girls teams. Coach Wilson went on to thank the parents for all the support and efforts they showed with the carb-loading parties and other activities. Coach Wilson announced the JV and Varsity Lettermen and women. The big highlight of the night was the announcing of the individual Awards and accomplishments. The Leadership Scholarship winners this year were Valerie Acevedo($1,000), Albert Davila($500) and Ryan Gamboa($500). The Coach Loney Award went to Ryan Gamboa(3 time winner). The award is named after long time Upland CC/TF Coach, Bob Loney, and is given to the Cross Country runner with the fastest time at any Mt. SAC race that year. Coach Wilson informed everyone that Chrysanthia Chung-Lau was the only athlete on the girl's CC team that was a 4 year Varsity Letterman. Also singled-out was Albert Davila for being a 4 year Junior Olympic National All-American. Congratulations to all the fine young men and women for a great season and all their personal triumphs. |
